One of the US leading LGBT festivals has announced the award winners of its 2017 edition, held from July 6th to July 16th and presented by HBO. Catherine Gund and Daresha Kyi’s bold documentary received both the:

 

Documentary Grand Jury Prize. The jury stated:

“We award Best Documentary Feature to Chavela, for its artistic style that elegantly and poetically brings together raw archival footage, animation, editing, and sound design.”

Best Documentary Feature Audience Award.

The story of this iconic woman who dared to break rules until becoming a true symbol in Latin-America, continues its successful festival career after winning the second place Panorama Audience Award at the Berlin Film Festival (where it premiered) and San Francisco’s Frameline Audience Award.

After being bought by Music Box Films for North America, the film will have a US planned theatrical release in October.
