WHY WE LOVE IT

In Spanish, ‘heroína’ has two meanings. On the one hand, it refers to a woman who performs heroic acts. On the other, it means an addictive and deadly drug. Producer and director Gerardo Herrero plays with this double meaning to portray a mother in Galicia, in the 1980s, who discovers that her son is addicted and, with nothing but her own courage, sets out to fight drug trafficking with the help of other mothers in the same situation. Based on true events, the film was selected at the Montreal World Film Festival, where its lead actress, Adriana Ozores, who was also nominated for a Goya Prize, received the award for Best Actress. At the Málaga Film Festival, it won the awards for Best Director, for Herrero, and Best Screenplay, for Ángeles González-Sinde.
